What MPGs does the 2015 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel get on the highway? How does it compare to the 2015 F-150 with the 2.7L EcoBoost on the same highway loop? The results are here.
Why do the highway fuel efficiency run? This is a test with fewest variables and least human interaction. Fill up at the gas station, get on the highway, set the cruise control, and study the results. Well, there are a few more details to it.
The route consists of a 21 mile stretch of I-25 just north of Denver, Colorado. It begins at the gas station near exit 229, then goes north to exit 250. This is where we turn around and head back south to the same gas station. The round-trip is approximately 43 miles.
Once, we are merging onto the highway, setting the cruise control at 65 mph and making the run down the relatively level stretch of highway with a few rolling hills. The elevation is just over 1 mile above sea level. We then turn around at exit 250, where there is only a stop sign, and come back to the gas station (again with cruise set to 65).
There were three people in the truck and a set of camera equipment. The outside temperature was 58F.
The EPA rates this DoubleCab BigHorn 4×2 with the 3.0L EcoBoost at 28 MPG on the highway. The result is typical for a turbo-diesel vehicle that is cruising on the highway.
For comparison, check the results with the 2.7L EcoBoost equipped 2015 Ford F-150.
