While the TFL crew was attending the 2014 Easter Jeep Safari, we caught a glimpse of a (possibly 1971) Datsun 521 pickup Truck. Sweet – no? It either has a J13 or J15 engine. The J13 made around 63 horsepower and the J15 made about 77hp. The Datsun 521 Pickup was a cleaner, more elegant update of the Datsun 520 Pickup.
What grabbed my attention was the overall shape of this truck. The green color looks pretty good and I bet it’s the same paint as when new.
The Datsun 521 Pickup differed from the Datsun 520 in that it has flatter body panels. There was a “Ute” version, the Datsun U521 and a van as well. The U521 had a single-piece body and a small, open bed. It looked like a car with a missing trunk-lid, but it was still a truck.
While I still prefer the Datsun 620 and 720 (you can read about them here), the Datsun 521 was a slick little truck with a small following in the United States.
