If you travel outside of central Beijing, China, the higher the amount of folks riding a three wheeled bike like the one pictured. Literally, thousands of these bikes are rolling all the time. It’s more than just a three wheeled bike, it’s a serious cargo carrier that some of the people in Beijing ride for several miles – daily.
Some people add an electric helper motor which is good for a few miles if it’s hooked up to a lead-acid battery.
The three wheeled bike pictured had just delivered a pallet’s worth of cement bricks. The owner was grabbing a bowl of noodles when I took a few pictures. He was (maybe) 110 lbs and he was carrying at least 300 lbs of bricks. Add to that the heavily polluted air and difficult to navigate traffic – I totally admired this little man and anyone who has to push this hard to make it in Beijing.
The days of these type of transports are numbered. China is becoming more modern and bikes are being swept away in favor for faster, small trucks. Click (here) to see the next step from a three wheeled bicycle for transport.
China is an amazing place to learn or re-learn prospective.
