General motors has been pretty tight-lipped about the capacities of the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado & GMC Canyon – especially the base tow rating.
We know that the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado & GMC Canyon come standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 200 horsepower and 191 lbs-feet of torque. The bigger 3.6-liter V6 is rated at 305 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque. A 2.8-liter diesel will debut sometime in 2015. That diesel may change the overall max-towing numbers too.
The max towing rating for the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado & GMC Canyon is 7,000 lbs – when properly equipped. That’s best-in-class and it exceeds the base tow rating of many full-sized pickups from just a few years back. The one tidbit we’re missing is the base tow rating for the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado & GMC Canyon.
Given the tow ratings of the competition (the Toyota Tacoma’s max tow rating is 6,500 lbs while the Nissan Frontier’s is rated at 6,300 lbs) and the fact that General Motors has a higher 7,000 lbs max tow rating, it stands to reason that the base tow rating for the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado & GMC Canyon should be around 4,000 lbs. I came up with that based on the current Toyota Tacoma’s 3,500 lbs tow rating.
If my numbers are correct, you will be able to (easily) tow two motorcycles driving the base, I4 with the six-speed manual. Basing a towing weight on two 2014 Husqvarna FE 350s (240.7 lbs each) and a 1,250 lbs U-Haul motorcycle trailer along with gear, the base model (200 hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder) 2015 Chevrolet Colorado & GMC Canyon should have no problem pulling your rides.
Production of the Colorado and Canyon will start in the fall of 2014.
