General Motors CEO, Marry Barra, confirms that “Chevrolet and GMC will reveal the new Silverado and Sierra this year”. This confirms what we suspected all along, but it does not give us any more detail than that. Still, we can tell you what to expect. Let’s dig in!

What CHANGES for 2027?

Exterior Design

The obvious change will be the updated exterior design. The rendering you see here is based on leaked U.S. patent office images. These leaked images were then editing to add color and a more realistic look. We still do not have any leaks related to the 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 lineup.

The current T1XX generation of the Silverado and Sierra trucks came out as 2019 models. These were refreshed for 2023/2024 model years. Now, we are about to see a more thorough redesign for the 2027 model year. Although, don’t expect GM to change every nut, bolt, frame, and cab panel for this. It’s usually smart to reuse foundational components that work and update powertrains and design on top of it.

Powertrains

  • 2.7L Turbomax I4 engine is likely to remain as the base engine.
  • 3.0L Duramax I6 engine is also likely to remain as an option.
  • 5.3L V8 is expected to be replaced by a new 5.7L V8
  • 6.2L V8 is expected to be replaced by a new 6.6L V8
  • Hybrid versions? This is still unclear.

The 8-speed and 10-speed automatic transmission are likely to remain as well.

Off-road Models: ZR2, AT4X, & AEV Editions

We have spy-image confirmation that GM is testing Sierra 1500 AT4X and Silverado 1500 ZR2 prototypes with 35-inch all-terrain tires. The specific tire size is 285/75R18. This technically works out to a 34.8-inch diameter, but most manufacturers would call this a “35”. It’s very close. This is a welcome update since it puts the ZR2 and AT4X models in direct competition with the Ford F-150 Raptor. The Raptor trucks have used “35”-inch tires since the 2010 1st-generation truck.

Suspension

Multimatic ASV “active” shocks / remote reservoir

We may see the new Multimatic ASV Spool-valve dampers in the top of the line ZR2 and AT4X pickup trucks. We first got a taste of these new shocks in GM’s Silverado EV ZR2 Concept off-road racing truck that they raced at the 2025 MINT 400 in Nevada.

Interior

The new Silverado and Sierra pickup trucks will have updated interior that further separate the two brands. Take a look at the new 2026 Chevy Tahoe and 2026 GMC Yukon interiors. The Silverado and Sierra may have similar design language and brand separation to their SUV cousins.

What STAYS the SAME?

Chassis

We do not expect GM to change the frame of the new trucks. The current Silverado and Sierra crew cab trucks have a wheelbase of 147.4 inches. This is about two inches longer than all of the competitors. This allows GM to have a very spacious cabin for the passengers and one of the largest and longest truck beds in the business. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

This being said, GM may updated the suspension mountain points in order to accommodate larger 35-inch all-terrain tires for their off-road models. Suspension updates may also have to be made to allow for 24-inch premium wheels on their luxurious High Country and Denali models.

Payload / Towing

The capability specs will likely stay about the same as they are. We expect the doors, hood, and tailgate of the new GM trucks to still be made out of aluminum. The rest of the components, including the bed, will continue with various strengths of steel alloys.
