Ford announces the next-generation F-150 Lightning pickup truck that includes a range-extending EREV with an internal combustion generator that can push the truck’s driving range to over 700 miles. The current 2025 F-150 Lightning ends production this month. Here is everything we know. Let’s dig in.
Ford says that the current Rouge Electric Vehicle Center workers who are winding down the current Lightning production in Dearborn will transition over to build the internal combustion F-150 and the F-150 Hybrid.
Ford did not provide exact specification and launch date for the next-generation F-150 Lightning EREV, but the company said that it will be propelled strictly by electric motors. The generator will supplement that power in the battery for worry-free road trip driving and trailer towing. This is how they predict it to have over 700 miles of driving range when not towing.
This driving range is interestingly close to that of the upcoming 2026 Ram 1500 REV. Ram states their range-extended electric pickup is coming in 2026 with a driving range of 690 miles. Naturally, Ford wants to best one of their competitors.
Ram 1500 REV
This Ram pickup truck used to be called RamCharger, but not anymore. It’s now called the Ram REV. This pickup truck is powered by two electric motors that combine for 647 horsepower. It uses a gasoline 3.6L Pentastar V6 (130 kW) engine as the generator. The generator tops off the 92 kWh battery. The Ram 1500 REV is said to have a maximum payload of 2,625 lbs and a maximum towing rating of 14,000 lbs. The Ram REV will not be a light-weight, but Ram says it will do a 0-60 MPH in 4.5 seconds.
Our viewer – Cole T. – has captured this Ram 1500 REV test vehicle towing a sizable trailer in the Colorado Rocky Mountains in June of 2025. Since we are seeing many Ram REV prototypes, we have to assume that it may reach customers before the next-gen F-150 Lightning EREV.
Scout Terra Harvester
We still do not know the Ram 1500 REV pricing. Ram promises several Ram REV trim levels, so the price and options will vary. There is another competitor in the game. The first-ever Scout Terra with the Harvester range-extender is another electric pickup truck that is coming to the U.S. market at the end of 2027. This will be very interesting.
