Toyota is conducting a new safety recall of 2025 Model Year Tacoma trucks.
While the Toyota Tacoma is still the best-selling midsize truck by a huge margin, this generation hasn’t been without its issues. And now owners have a new recall to add to the list — at least if they own a brand-new 2025 Tacoma. That is, the front driveshaft joints may be defective, and can deform or break while driving.
In all, this latest campaign covers approximately 6,000 four-wheel drive 2025 Toyota Tacoma trucks. In the grand scheme of its sales volumes, that is not a huge swath of buyers. However, it is still noteworthy for those few thousand who are impacted, as drivers may not be able to drive the vehicle as intended, and full-time 4WD trucks (i.e. the Limited trim) can even move while the transmission is in Park, if the electronic parking brake isn’t also applied.
Toyota says the suspect trucks could have been assembled with front driveshafts that do not have the correct material requirements to meet the automaker’s specifications.
What’s the fix and when is it coming?
Affected 2025 Toyota Tacoma owners will receive a notice from the manufacturer in late November. That notice will contain instructions for the 6,000-or-so impacted to take their trucks into their local dealer for inspection. Once there, technicians will check the front driveshaft assembly serial numbers against those determined to be defective. If the truck then has a defective driveshaft, Toyota will replace the assembly free of charge.
Unfortunately, the current-generation Tacoma has experienced its fair share of issues since launch. Certain 2024-2025 Toyota Tacoma trucks currently have open recall campaigns for leaking rear brake hoses as well as malfunctioning driver information screens. Several have also reported issues with the 8-speed automatic transmission, from lurching, slipping and rough shifts to wholesale failures at low mileages. At this time, there isn’t yet an open recall concerning engine or transmission issues for the new Tacoma.
