The MAN KAT 8×8 decommissioned military truck looks intimidating, but it may just be a gentle giant when you get to know it. This truck has four locking differentials and it weighs about 50,000 lbs just by itself. Kase takes it for a first drive to find out what it’s really like to drive.
The 18-liter diesel engine produces around 360 horsepower, and the driver uses an 8-speed manual transmission to drive it. However, this manual transmission is not normal. It’s connected to a torque converter, so it behaves a lot like an automatic transmission after you select the gear you want.
Could it be a daily driver? Well – Jay and Kase did take on the highway and they went at around 60 MPH without much discomfort. This is likely near this truck’s top speed.
How is it off-road? It’s a beast that can go nearly anywhere, if there is enough space to turn. The two front axles are steered. It’s relatively maneuverable for its giant size, but it will be very difficult to park at a local grocery store.
