Have you wondered about how efficient a 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 with the 6.2L V8 is when towing a 7,000 lbs box trailer? Wonder no more. This is the fourth half-ton truck we tested this year. The other pickups in the group are: 2017 Ford F-150 3.5L EcoBoost V6 with a 10-speed automatic, 2017 Nissan Titan half-ton with the 5.6L V8 with a 7-speed automatic, and a 2016 Ram 1500 3.0L Ecodiesel V6 with a 8-speed automatic.
The 2017 Silverado 1500 LTZ you see here is powered by a 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 with 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. The big V8 is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. This truck has a towing package and a 3.42 rear-end ratio. The main competitor to the Silverado in this 100-mile highway mpg loop is the 2017 F-150 with the second generation 3.5L EcoBoost V6 with the 10-speed automatic. The F-150 we tested towed the same identical trailer on the same route. The F-150 also had a towing package and a 3.55 rear-end ratio.
