The all-new 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV edition is here and it’s time to put it to a road trip MPG test. I need to drive around 200 miles to and from the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb event. This AT4X AEV pickup truck has extremely good off-road capability, we already showed it in one of our TFLoffroad video reviews. Most owners spend majority of their time on road and highways, so I wanted to see how efficient it is on a road trip. The EPA rates it at 16 MPG highway and combined. Here is how it does in the real world. Let’s dig in!
This is a factory lifted truck. It rides on large 35-inch all-terrain tires. It’s also relatively heavy for a midsize pickup because it has steel bumpers, five steel skid plates, and other equipment from AEV. GM engineers and designers put it all together into a luxurious, capable, and pricey package.
It’s powered by a 2.7L turbocharged high-output I4 engine with 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.
This is a loop road trip. I need to go from Denver, Colorado to Colorado Springs and back. Spoiler Alert: this GMC retuned 19.2 MPG on my road trip. It’s impressive if you consider that this truck is focused on off-road capability and not on-road efficiency.

Also, here is my first off-road drive in the 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV in Montana.
