Is FCA building a Ram based full-size Dodge SUV to Challenge the Chevrolet Suburban?

This is not the first time that a possible Ram based full-size Dodge SUV was whispered about. It’s not the first time that the media explored that possibility either. It is the first time that the head of Fiat Chrysler’s Jeep and Ram brands (Mike Manley) has mentioned it. In a recent interview given to Brent Snavely of the Detroit Free Press, Manley has some insight regarding the possibilities if the newRam platform is used. “You have the opportunity with a new frame for the next-generation Ram,” Manley said referring to the next generation Ram 1500. “You have the opportunity to take a large SUV off of it because we already have a very, very capable frame today that is going to be upgraded.”

If you look at the math, General Motors sold over 200,000 trucks based on the Suburban/K2XX platform (Tahoes, Escalades, Yukons etc.). Ford sold well over 50,000 Expeditions and Lincoln Navigators combined. Hell, even Toyota managed to sell well over 12,000 Sequoias in 2015. With a new Nissan Armada on the way, and with the possibility of Toyota significantly upgrading the Sequoia soon, FCA may be looking to jump into the fray sooner rather than later.

What about the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, why not put a frame under them? Nope, if you check out this TFLcar post (here) about the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, it appears that they will be based on the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee. This Ram based full-size Dodge SUV (there may be a Chrysler variant too) will be a larger, more truck-like vehicle by far. It also means that the platform would be a prime place to install the 3.0-liter V6 diesel and the eight-speed automatic transmission.

What do yo think? Is the full-sized SUV market too crowded for a Ram based Dodge SUV?

I say, as long as fuel is cheap, bring it on!
